A few days ago came out the new flagship of the Korean company LG, we speak of the LG Optimus G, which has more than formidable specifications that place it by itself as candidate to the throne of Android, place that until now occupied by by far the Samsung Galaxy S3. Is there a new king in Android?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a round curvy design inspired by nature, aims to the soft lines and although its colors at this point with eight months on the market are varied, their typical model are white and blue, natural colors .

The LG Optimus G stands on the opposite sidewalk in design: a commitment to hard lines and a rectangular boundary well demarcated, making it look more serious. Their colors at the moment are white and black, with opposing front and back.

Both devices are stunning at sight and in terms of building the Optimus G gives the feeling of being a little better quality although the Galaxy S3 feels great in the hand especially for its weight.

As to its size, the Galaxy S3 has 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm with a weight of 133 grams, meanwhile the Optimus G measures 131.9 x 68.9 G x 8.5 mm and weighs 145 grams. As we can see, the Galaxy S3 is slightly longer and wider but its weight is less due to the plastic that covers its housing, meanwhile the LG Optimus G is just one tenth of a millimeter thinner which is almost unnoticeable.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a screen of 4.8 inches Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen 16 million colors and offers a resolution of 720 x 1280 and a pixel density of 306 pixels per inch.

The LG Optimus G has a 4.7 inch LCD screen True HD IPS capacitive touchscreen also 16 million colors and a resolution of 768 x 1280 pixels which delivers 318 pixels per inch.

Here we have a nice competition since sizes and resolutions are almost equal and the display technologies are very good each with different characteristics. According to experts, the Samsung Super AMOLED offers deep blacks with greater intensity in highlights while True HD-IPS LCD has great color definition with a less intense brightness.

The Galaxy S3 has the well known Exynos 4 Quad 1.4 GHz quad-core and its GPU is the Mali 400. No doubt a good combination that throws off large results in benchmarks and a great fluidity in the UI.

Meanwhile, the LG Optimus G brings the ultimate in power and technology as it has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8064 1.5 GHz and its GPU is a Adreno 320.

The LG´s device hardware is superior to Samsung although is logical since they have about eight months of difference, which in technology represents an important period.

Memory & Storage

As for memory & storage there is good and bad for each side: the Galaxy S3 has 1GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB/64GB of internal memory with the ability to expand with a microSD slot up to 64GB.

The LG Optimus G incorporates more RAM as it features 2GB and its internal storage is 32 GB but has no SD card slot.

While 32GB is enough space to store photos and movies, the truth is that the ability to remove the SD to share files without having to do it on the phone is something appreciated by users, it is a pity that they have not incorporated in this model so powerful.

This is a sensitive issue because the updates are a much discussed topic and that users constantly complain about. Except for Google’s Nexus devices, all others are tied to their manufacturers and operators to receive the operating system updates with a significant delay.

That said, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes by default with Android Ice Cream Sandwich and the upgrade to Android Jelly Bean is currently in various European countries.

If there is a big disadvantage of the LG Optimus G is its operating system, because by now it should bring Jelly Bean and yet it has Ice Cream Sandwich which is a step back, and if we consider that manufacturers always are slow to launch the updates this represents a section to consider. Furthermore, note that is the flagship of LG thus it would be expected that they pay close attention to this aspect.

The Galaxy S3 has an 8 MP rear camera with a resolution of 3264×2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, touch focus, image stabilizer, video 1080p @ 30fps and a 1.9MP front camera capable of recording at 720p @ 30fps.

The LG Optimus G has a rear camera 13 MP/8MP (varies by region), autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization, geo-tagging, video 1080p @ 30fps and its front camera is 1.3MP 720p.

Let us briefly review the characteristics and which model is the best in each of them:

In terms of design is up to the user which is more attractive, and in terms of size must be declared a draw because although the Optimus G is a bit smaller and heavier its construction materials are a little better quality.

Regarding Display also have to declare a draw as the Galaxy S3 is slightly larger but with a slightly lower resolution than the Optimus G, in terms of display technology remains to everyone’s taste wich is better wether the Super AMOLED of Samsung or True HD IPS LCD from LG.

With regard to the processor the model of LG is a bit superior to the Samsung´s as it features the same number of cores but its speed is 100MHz higher, therefore in this section should be declared as winner the Optimus G but not by much.

As for the RAM and storage is raised another dilemma, the Optimus G has twice the RAM but its internal storage is fixed and has no slot for micro SD. Meanwhile the S3 has half of RAM but comes in different models of internal storage and has micro SD slot. Is up to the user which of the two is more important, RAM or internal storage.

As for the camera little can be said because while the Optimus G has more MP in the rear camera, this is not an indicator for determining the final quality of the photographs, and added to this the Galaxy S3 has front a camera higher in MP but neither represents a substantial section. Again a tie.

That said, should be declared as a tie between these two models! While the Optimus G has a better processor this section alone can not mean a win over the ultra sold Galaxy S3 therefore remains to be seen if in the coming months the Jelly Bean benchmarks shed more accurate data.

For now, the Android throne has two kings.

What do you think? Which one is better? LG Optimus G or Samsung Galaxy S3?
